The Plague Rat ("prat") is a mid- to high-level boss; two of them reside in a room in the east tunnels of the wolf caves, usually accompanied by many rats. Defeating the Plague Rat is difficult because players cannot enter its cave with any weapons, armor or containers besides belts, gloves, rings, amulets, charms, pouches, and consumables. Its nest can drop any scroll in the game, so fighting it on a regular basis could be a cost-efficient way of obtaining tier 3 and tier 4 scrolls without going to the tomb.
AI[]
- Plague rats will attack anything that comes inside of the boss room. If a plague rat's target leaves the room, the plague rat will run back inside the room.
- After losing at least 25% of its health, a plague rat will begin to utter "Squeeeeek!", summoning 5 to 15 rats each time. As the plague rat's health gets lower and lower, it will begin to summon rats much more rapidly.

Boss Strategies[]
- Using Polymorph Potion
- Polymorph into an orc, satyr, or satyr elder. A Minotaur could also work, but you must enter the cave before polymorphing, since Minotaurs cannot fit in the wolf caves.
- Bring 1-2 potions of invisibility, 1-3 potions of cure, and 1-3 potions of extra life. For emergencies, you can also bring 1-2 scrolls of teleportation.
- If your focused magic school is evocation, you can cast scrolls of burning ember as a satyr or satyr elder. Note that you will have to be positioned horizontally with the plague rat for the ember to make contact.
- You can drink the potion of invisibility before entering the cave or after entering the cave depending on how many rats are in the cave.
- If you are a satyr elder and you are using pan pipes:
- Satyr elders will not need to carry potions of cure, potions of extra life, or even potions of invisibility since deep sleep prevents plague rats from attacking or summoning rats.
- Enter the plague rats' room and use the pan pipes. Kill the plague rats. Open the nest.
- Note that using pan pipes to sleep enemies has a cooldown.
- If you are not using pan pipes:
- Enter the plague rat's room and hit a plague rat. Move back and forth with A and D while attacking to dodge some of the plague rat's attacks. Try to avoid hitting the other rats in the room.
- Repeat for the second plague rat, then open the nest.
- Using Scrolls of Burning Ember
- To attempt the plague rat with this strategy, you should have, at least:
- A life level of 30.
- A drinking level of 9 or 10.
- A 60% or 70% keep chance on scrolls of burning ember (such as when evocation is glowing).
- Bring 3-4 scrolls of burning ember, 1-2 potions of invisibility, 1-3 potions of cure, and 1-3 potions of extra life. For emergencies, you can also bring 1-2 scrolls of teleportation.
- You can drink the potion of invisibility before entering the cave or after entering the cave depending on how many rats are in the cave.
- Enter the room and hit a plague rat, then immediately run in the opposite horizontal direction and turn around. The plague rat should be positioned horizontally to you.
- Use embers to kill the plague rat. You can also attack with your hands if that does not risk hitting other rats. Do not move until the plague rat is dead.
- Repeat for the second plague rat, then open the nest.
- To attempt the plague rat with this strategy, you should have, at least:
- Using Scrolls of Summon Wolf
- To attempt the plague rat with this strategy, you should have, at least:
- A life level of 20.
- A drinking level of 5 or 6.
- A 70% or 80% keep chance on scrolls of summon wolf (such as when conjuration is glowing).
- Bring 4-8 scrolls of summon wolf and 2-3 potions of cure. For emergencies, you can also bring 1-2 scrolls of teleportation.
- On the way to the plague rats' room, summon wolves to kill rats. If there are over 10 rats in one section of the tunnel, run to the previous section, summon a few wolves, and slowly lure rats to the wolves. Repeat this process until you have advanced to just outside of the plague rats' room and have killed all the rats there.
- Summon around 10 wolves (make sure they don't get stuck) and let them follow you into the plague rats' room. As the wolves fight, continue summoning more wolves; you can also summon bats at this point.
- Wolves can catch disease and plague. If you see "(cough)" appearing over one of your wolves, stay away from it.
- If the plague rats summon enough rats to overwhelm all of your wolves, quickly run out of the room and repeat the process of summoning wolves in a safe area and luring rats to the wolves.
- Once all rats are dead, enter the room again and repeat the process until the plague rats are dead, then open the nest.
- Sometimes, when using this strategy, the nest will be unlocked when only one plague rat has died.
- To attempt the plague rat with this strategy, you should have, at least:
- Using Scrolls of Drain Life
- To attempt the plague rat with this strategy, you should have, at least:
- A life level of 28.
- A drinking level of 5 or 6.
- A 60% or 70% keep chance on scrolls of drain life (such as when necromancy is glowing).
- Bring 3-5 scrolls of drain life, 1-2 potions of invisibility, and 1-3 potions of cure. For emergencies, you can also bring 1-2 scrolls of teleportation.
- You can drink the potion of invisibility before entering the cave or after entering the cave depending on how many rats are in the cave.
- Enter the plague rat's room and hit a plague rat. Move back and forth with A and D while attacking to dodge some of the plague rat's attacks. After you have lost at least 30 health, start draining. Try to avoid hitting the other rats in the room.
- Repeat for the second plague rat, then open the nest.
- To attempt the plague rat with this strategy, you should have, at least:
- Using Scrolls of Poison Cloud
- To attempt the plague rat with this strategy, you should have, at least:
- A life level of 23.
- A bind wounds level of 15.
- A drinking level of 5 or 6.
- Bring up to 3 scrolls of poison cloud and 1-3 potions of cure. For emergencies, you can also bring 1-2 scrolls of teleportation.
- You can use a potion of invisibility if you don't want to deal with rats on the way to the plague rats' room. However, once you use the poison cloud, rats will attack you whether you are invisible or not.
- Enter the boss room and use a scroll of poison cloud. The rats will die in a few seconds from the poison, but if you still don't want to lose health from the rats, you can run outside of the room.
- If the room is empty of rats, you can use other forms of damage on the plague rats to speed up the process. Hitting the plague rats yourself also allows you to see their health bar, which can be useful if you're outside of the room.
- When the first poison cloud starts to fade, summon another one. Only two uses are needed usually; three at the very most unless you wait too long and let the plague rats regenerate health.
- When both plague rats are dead, open the nest.
- To attempt the plague rat with this strategy, you should have, at least:
